“Wow!” exclaimed the Maccabi Victoria All Abilities team (the ‘Dolphins’) when the Maccabi Warriors Big V team walked through the door “They are so tall!”

On Monday (30.06.14) evening, the Warriors team was kind enough to give up their precious time and meet the Dolphins team at Orrong Romanis. This was the first time we have run a combined training session for several years. The partnership session enabled our All Abilities players to train with the mainstream team and meet new people. We are so thankful to Drew Solewicz (Warriors Coach), Josh Burns (Warriors Captain) and Susannah Swaitlo (Maccabi Basketball Club president) for helping to support this initiative by organising the volunteers and the venue. We are very appreciative of the volunteers, the Warriors players, who attended the session; Josh Burns, David Burns, Jarred Keiser, Adam Blau, Gavin Katz and Benji Tamir. We hope that you all enjoyed the session as much as the Dolphins players did.

In effect, this specific program is aiming to promote inclusion and integration. The fundamental reason behind running such a session is to change the culture of Maccabi Clubs. We want to see all 23 clubs becoming totally and completely inclusive of people with all sorts of abilities ranging from those with disabilities through to the elite sportsmen such as the senior basketball team.

The Maccabi Basketball Club is without doubt the leader of Maccabi Clubs by demonstrating best practices in disability inclusion in sport. The Club has enabled the All Abilities team to sit under its wing for the last eight years and this relationship continues to grow and strengthen. 2014 has marked a very exciting year for the Dolphins team in terms of linking in with the mainstream club. They attended their first NBL game on Maccabi Game Day, participated in a special training session with Damian Ryan and now the Warriors. Our next adventure will be taking place at the end of the month, (27th July), at ‘an afternoon of basketball’. The Warriors team will be hosting All Abilities members at their final match for the winter season and inviting team to join in a half time event and post game celebrations.

We look forward to continuing to work with the mainstream basketball club and its teams.
