The 'Fun Sports Tour in the City' was a unique and innovative one-day holiday program held on Thursday the 17th of April, 2014. The event gave Jewish people with disabilities the chance to venture into the city and learn more about the history of sport in Melbourne as well as contemporary sports culture.

The jam-packed schedule included a train ride to Richmond station, a guided tour of the MCG and National Sports Museum, lunch at Birrung Marr Park by the Yarra River and a walk along Melbourne’s Sport and Entertainment Precinct (including Rod Laver Arena, AAMI Park, Olympic park and the Westpac Centre). The group was fortunate enough to meet a Melbourne Tigers basketball player Auryn MacMillan as well as observe elite athletes and teams in training including the Melbourne Storm rugby team and several reserve Collingwood Football players.

The event was well attended with ten participants of all abilities including one individual who had never previously been involved with Maccabi Victoria All Abilities programs. This demonstrates the growth and success of the All Abilities project. These numbers are expected to significantly increase throughout the year as the program continues to expand. The group required the assistance of three enthusiastic support workers; an aide and a parent to help ensure the day ran smoothly.

The program had three main objectives:

  • To provide people with disabilities the opportunity to have an active presence in the community.
  • To assist people with disabilities to partake in light physical exercise in a fun and safe environment.
  • To provide families of people with disabilities respite time.

Overall this was an extremely successful All Abilities recreation program. One of the All Abilities attendees, Joshua Ferenbach reported that this was his favourite program  that Maccabi Victoria has ever organised. “The holiday program at the MCG and Museum was my favourite. It was great to see the big MCG field; it looks so much smaller on TV! I loved going to the players change rooms and showing my friends what the players do in there, like pretending to be their coach”.
