Barry Smorgon announced as Head of Delegation for Pan-Am Games 2019

Posted: 25-Jan-2019 by PanAm Games 2019

Maccabi Australia is thrilled to announce the appointment of Barry Smorgon OAM  as Head of Australian Delegation to the 2019 Maccabi Pan-American Maccabi Games in Mexico City. Barry boasts decades of experience within Maccabi and adds this role to his existing positions as MAI Chairman and Head of Delegation for the 2021 Maccabiah Games.

Barry brings tremendous experience and expertise to the role having served as Patron of the Maccabi International Games in Sydney 2004 and 2010. Barry was elected to the Executive of Maccabi Australia in 2006, and created the Board of Governors in 2007, serving as Founding Chairman, along with the role of Chairman of MAI.

The appointment was the logical one to lead our team in Mexico, with Smorgon already scheduled to attend the games. The role of Head of Delegation is a prestigious one and will see Smorgon act as the official representative of the Australian team.

“The role is primarily outward facing, to represent Australia or MAI at official functions” Smorgon said.

“In addition, my role is having an overview of any management issues that may arise, and provide counsel and support to the Australian Leadership Team and General Manager should the need arise”

Smorgon feels the Pan-American Games forms a strong element of the Maccabi Australia calendar, and this is borne out by the 2019 delegation being the largest to ever participate in the game. “We’ve always participated in the games, and our team will number about 135 athletes and management. This is a significant financial and time commitment, and demonstrates the value placed on such opportunities by our members and the community”

“I believe that we (Maccabi) play an important role in engagement within our own community and in the broader community,” he said.

“And sport is one of the vehicles, that helps to unite the community and is our raison d'être”

“We do indeed represent the Australian Jewish community and Australia at large. Everyone wears the green and gold with pride. The Pan-Ams are always exciting and interesting as the South Americans are such excitable and passionate people especially when it comes to sport. Many people would like to go to Mexico City because of the impressive communal centre they have, which will serve as the central hub for the games. Given the discussions that have been taking place for several years about White City and its redevelopment, I’d like to see how a communal area such as they have actually functions.”

The Pan-American Games will take place in Mexico City from 5-15 July this year. To follow all the latest from the Australian team ‘like’ Maccabi Australia on Facebook and follow us on Instagram.
