COMMONWEALTH GAMES WRAP

Maccabi Australia was proud to have 5 Jewish athletes representing Australia at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.  As a group they bagged 2 Gold Medals, 2 Bronze Medals and 3 top 10 performances.

Jemima Montag – Athletics
Gold Medal – 20KM Walk
The first ever from the Jewish community to win a Commonwealth Games Gold Medal.  Jemima led for much of the 20KM walk until Aussie team mate Claire Tallent chased her down for the lead with 2KM to go.  Jemima was only few metres behind Tallent when she was disqualified.  She breezed past her to win the Gold in only her third 20KM event in 1:32:50.  It was terrific to watch Jemima win with grace as she embodied sporting spirit when comforting her teammate on her disqualification.

Matt Levy – Swimming
Gold Medal – 50 free S7
At 31 Matt is a senior statesman on the Australian Dolphins swim team and has represented Australia at World Championships and the Paralympics several times.  Matt swam a sizzling 28.68 seconds for his 50 metres freestyle leading from start to finish to win Gold. At the 2017 Maccabiah Games he swum a S7 World record in 200m Freestyle – the first World Record set at a Maccabiah Games and resulted in him being awarded male athlete of the Maccabiah.

Alexandra Kiroi-Bogatyreva – Rhythmic Gymnastics
Bronze Medal – Team (competing in all four disciplines – hoop, ball, clubs and ribbon)
Bronze Medal – Ball
5th – Ribbon
10th – All-Around (competing in all four disciplines)
At just 16 Alexandra is the youngest of our athletes who competed at the Gold Coast.  This was a breakthrough competition for Alexandra as she announced herself as a formidable competitor on the world arena – her performances were beautiful to watch.

Stephen Solomon – Athletics
7th -  400M
Relay team representative – 4 by 400M
After getting through the qualifying rounds and the semi-finals it was thrilling to see Stephen in the 400m Final.  He has been a stalwart on the Australian team since 2012 representing at Olympics and World Championship events.

Barak Mizrachi – Table Tennis
Barack competed in the TT6 Table Tennis, unfortunately he did not make it through to the Round of 16 but impressed with his grit and determination as a competitor.

“Maccabi is thrilled with and so proud of the performances of all the Jewish athletes at the Commonwealth Games.  In particular, it has been wonderful to see Jemima and Alexandra emerging as new talent on the world stage. We are honored to have supported all of these Commonwealth Games representatives on their journey to elite athlete through scholarships and awards.” Jeff Sher – President, Maccabi Australia
