Wrap Up from the European Maccabi Games

Futsal Team Earn the Silver

The Australian Maccabi Futsal side played Israel at the 2015 European Maccabi games in Berlin and created History , not only by beating the Israel team in a competitive game for the first time but in doing so earning a place in the final of the competition thereby setting up an opportunity to defend the gold medal they won so magnificently in Vienna in 2011.

Led by two current Futsalroos , Jarrod Basger and Jordan Mundell and greatly supported by an incredibly talented and bonded squad which includes an additional two members of the Futsalroo Train on squad in Robbie Ezekiel and Jonathan Barzel - the team is predominantly made up of players from the accomplished Eastern Suburbs Hakoah Futsal club who triumphed in the NSW premier league Grand Finals earlier this year after taking out the minor premiership a couple of weeks earlier.

President of the club, Daniel Sharp was in Berlin supporting the team and highlighted his pride at their achievements . He pointed out the incredible opportunities available to the club members coming through the age groups by highlighting the fact that the majority of the players in Berlin have actually made it into the squad by earning their stripes through the junior ESHFC ranks.

Unfortunately, the history making Semi final win against Israel probably came one game too soon and the boys just didn’t quite have enough petrol left in the tank to earn the back to back victories that they had worked so hard to achieve.

The final was a tense, tight affair with the scores level 1-1 at half time thanks to an equaliser form Johnny Barzel who emerged from the tournament with great credit. Johnny also scored our second before Jordan Mundell, in unfortunate circumstances, received his marching orders for retaliation in what turned out to be the turning point of the game.

In truth the expectation we have of these boys to achieve at the highest level has been set by their previous results and the character they have shown over the years and while they are currently devastated at not having achieved Gold in Berlin, they will no doubt use the result as motivation to achieve even greater success in Israel in 2017. With the talent at his disposal, Steve Knight will be disappointed but philosophical and in his inimitable way will urge the boys to put the result behind them in search of the improvement they need to succeed in Israel.

Our Futsal boys still deserve a massive congratulations for their achievement, making their club - and their country proud.

After the first two rounds, Maccabi stalwart Harry Procel was sitting in 8th position, only four shots off the bronze, but the last round saw him fall away from the lead players, finishing 12th out of 26.
