Maccabiah 2017 Head of Delegation Appointed

Maccabi Australia is thrilled to announce that the Head of Delegation for the 2017 Maccabiah Games is Tom York OAM. Tom has been a stalwart in the Maccabi movement and brings enormous experience and capability to the role.

He has previously held senior management positions across many events and teams including as General Manager for two previous Maccabiah Games and Head of Delegation for the JCC Games. In addition Tom has been involved in managing basketball and handball teams to a number of Olympic Games and World Championships.

In making the announcement Barry Smorgon OAM, President of Maccabi Australia noted that “Tom is an ideal candidate for the Maccabiah role especially as he will be able to provide guidance and mentorship to the Maccabiah management team and  work with the organising committee to ensure Australia’s interests are met for the forthcoming Games. Maccabi Australia is both excited and privileged to have Tom appointed to this role.”

On accepting the positon, Tom noted that he is “delighted to work with Maccabi Australia to deliver an outstanding team for the 2017 Games. Maccabi has given me the most extraordinary life experiences, and I am thrilled to take on this position, which enables me to give back to an organisation that has given me so much.”

He went on to say that the Maccabiah experience is one that all Jewish athletes should have the opportunity to experience.

Tom represents the first of many management appointments that will be made in the ensuing months as planning for the 20th Maccabiah steps up in earnest. The Games are set to take place in Israel from July 6, 2017.
