The Australian cricket teams heading to Israel for the Maccabiah Games will be selected by people with vast experience in elite level cricket, with the Australian Team Management ratifying the appointment of the selection panels for both the Open Mens and Junior Boys teams.

The Selection Panels, which will operate under the guidance of the Selection Charter that has been established, each have three members that all bring varying skills and experiences to the table.

The Selection Panel for the Open team will include John MacWhirter (VIC), Steve Herzberg (NSW) and Daniel Onas (VIC).

The Selection Panel for the Junior team comprises Julien Wiener (VIC) and Steve Herzberg (NSW), while the third panel member is likely to be the Junior team coach once that position has been filled.

Now retired and living in Torquay, John MacWhirter is a former Victorian Chairman of Selectors who was involved in Victorian domestic cricket at the highest level during its most successful era throughout the 1990's and early 2000's.

His inclusion on the Open team Selection Panel is a huge coup for the team who will benefit massively from his vast experience in dealing with elite level cricket and selection.

Steve Herzberg is a former state cricketer who represented both Western Australia and Tasmania, as well as playing first-class cricket for English County sides Kent, Worcestershire and Somerset.

Steve also attended the Maccabiah Games for cricket in 1989 and then went again as captain in 1993 where he led the side to a gold medal, and he will be the only selector to sit on both the Open and Juniors selection panels.

The youngest member of the Open Selection Panel, Daniel Onas has recently retired from cricket after a stellar career playing for the Maccabi AJAX Cricket Club as well as the Camberwell Magpies Premier Cricket Club.

A talented all-rounder, Daniel is a five-time Club Champion at Maccabi AJAX and also attended the Maccabiah Games for cricket in 2005, helping the side win the silver medal. He lives in Melbourne.

Julien Wiener is currently the only Australian Jewish cricketer to have reached the pinnacle of the sport by obtaining a Baggy Green Cap.

Needing little introduction, Julien played six test matches and seven one-day internationals for Australia in 1979/80, as well as representing Victoria and also acting as a Victorian selector in more recent years.

Julien played for many years at the Prahran Premier Cricket Club where he was inducted as a Life Member in 2011, and he also attended the Maccabiah Games for cricket in 1973, 1977 and 1985, leading his side to gold in his final appearance.

Nominations for the Australian Cricket team heading to the 19th Maccabiah Games close on 30 June 2012, and information nights are being held for any prospective participants in each of Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth throughout June.
