Youth Boys rally in tough Pan-Am welcome

Posted: 08-Jul-2019 by PanAm Games 2019

The Youth Boys began their Pan-Am campaign with a baptism of fire as they went down 103-42 to a strong US outfit.

It was a gutsy performance from Warrick Giddey’s side, who showed spirit in a match that will almost certainly be their toughest in Mexico. From the outset, they were up against it in a harsh welcome to the rigors of competition basketball.

Co-captain Beck Rosen led from the front with some big plays including an enormous block that sent the crowd into rapture. Rosen nailed some clutch shots to keep the from blowing out further and looked to drive his team forward.

There were also big performances from Ariel Eisner and Nico Taranto as the Aussie boys rallied in the face of a ballooning score line.

"It was a great 48-minute effort by the boys, they never gave up," Giddey said.

"Really we got thrown into the fire first up and that may be the toughest game of the championship. We stayed positive and to battle on against a team that was physically superior and talent-wise I thought the boys did a great job"

"Beck [Rosen] made some inspirational stuff and he was clearly undersized in there, and he had that great block and some great rebounds."

With this game out of the way, they can now look forward to likely less one-sided clashes against Mexico, Israel and Colombia.
