Child Safety Standards

As from 1 January 2017 it is legislated that all non-government funded child services agencies must now adopt new child safety standards.   These new standards apply to the Maccabi organisation as a whole and to all of our clubs in particular. It is therefore essential that you as persons charged with the running of our clubs become familiar with these new standards and take steps to ensure that you and your clubs comply with them. Serious penalties apply if you do not.

While the new standards are compulsory for all child services organisations in Victoria, with the agreement of each of our affiliated States, they will as from 1 January 2017 apply to all Maccabi organisations and clubs nationally.

The following is a summary of the new child safety standards that will apply from 1 January 2017:

Standard 1: Strategies to embed an organisational culture of child safety, including through effective leadership arrangements
Standard 2: A child safe policy or statement of commitment to child safety
Standard 3: A code of conduct that establishes clear expectations for appropriate behaviour with children
Standard 4: Screening, supervision, training and other human resources practices that reduce the risk of child abuse by new and existing personnel
Standard 5: Processes for responding to and reporting suspected child abuse
Standard 6: Strategies to identify and reduce or remove risks of child abuse
Standard 7: Strategies to promote the participation and empowerment of children
