Belokopytov takes out inaugural Maccabi tournament

Posted: 18-Aug-2017 by Table Tennis

Maccabi Table Tennis staged its Inaugral Open competition at our usual venue on August 13, 2017. Attracting a top field of 17, played over 3 tables, and overseen by Club Coach Guy Fairnbloom, the winner was always going to need to produce a stellar effort…and so it was!

Third place went to Robert Chertok, and 2nd place to Shea Kiely. Shea is still at school, and State ranked at under 18 level, and dreams one day of playing for Australia. The winner however, by 3 rubbers to 1 was Edward Belokopytov , who is a State ranked Under 21 player.  Eddi , just out of school, has an unusual defensive style; and attributes much of his success to being told “you’ll never make it with that defensive style”

In a classic final, the standard was mouth-watering; and Eddi showed why he featured in 2 CHS School Championships for SBHS; as well as being selected in 2015 for the Pacific School Table tennis Championships, in beating a semi-professional Chinese competitor.

Played at this level, Table tennis is anything but a casual garage pastime, with pennant players practising regularly every week.

Maccabi Table Tennis now meets only on the first Sunday of every month, at its regular venue;  and also fields a single Pennant team, playing weekly in the Hurstville South Western Sydney Association. At the time of writing, after 4 rounds, they are undefeated.

Club President, Danny Beran congratulates all competitors and welcomes any interested players to join our Sunday Club meetings from 6pm. (The first Sunday of the month only)
