Maccabi beams proudly after two Kanga Cup wins!

Posted: 17-Jul-2019 by Junior Football (Maccabi Hakoah Junior Football Club)

The Kanga Cup is the largest football tournament in the Southern Hemisphere, with around 10,000 athletes converging on Canberra every year to compete. This year Maccabi Hakoah sent 3 teams to the competition, they played in Division 1 to compete for the Cup.

Under 9 Team

Coached by Ryan Bloch, the u9s were a special team as they were made up of half Maccabi players and half Hakoah SAP players. They were undefeated in their road to the semi finals and did not concede a single goal, aided by a solid defence led by captain Jonah Bloch with Aaron Pal, Jonah Bloom and Ethan Scurnik in support. Noam Yudasim and Ben Katz were both solid in goal, and also two of the team’s best strikers, scoring many goals between them.

Our last game before the semi finals was a top of the group clash against Curl Curl with Maccabi Hakoah winning 1-0 due to a screamer scored by Jonah Bloch in the final minutes of the game. They then progressed to play Wagga Wagga in the semi finals, which was a tough match where Noam Yudasim was a standout in goals and Jordan Greenberg scored the winner in a beautiful volley off an Aaron Pal corner to progress the boys to the final.

In the final, the boys faced Concord, a tough attacking team who also reached the finals undefeated. The final was a tense game with Maccabi Hakoah conceding in the first half under very tough, windy conditions. Coach Ryan Bloch gave an inspiring half time talk and the boys reacted immediately, with Eden Smoli scoring a long range effort within minutes of the second half. The rest of that half and the extra time was an even battle, with neither team able to score, sending the game into a penalty shoot out. The tense environment continued and the penalty shoot out was a tight encounter where penalties were even and reached 3-3, when Noam Yudasim made a tremendous save to give Jordan Greenberg the opportunity to step up and clinch the win with the final penalty. The team played a spectacular tournament, and there was an amazing team spirit for the players, parents and fans as they raised the Cup to loud cheers.

Under 10 Team

U10 Hakoah team was coached by Joel Floress who coaches them during the
SAP season. They played in the first division of the Kanga comp, against 5 strong SAP teams. Four from NSW and one from Victoria. The boys were very excited to compete in this high level competition and showed all their skills.

Our run to the grand final was faced with three wins, one draw and one loss. After the loss, coach Joel spent time with each player discussing strategy and their positions on the field. This talk inspired our players to fight hard, use their learnt skills and work as a team to get to the semi finals.

We finished second in our division which lead us to play in the Semi finals against 3rd spot St Albans Victoria. This game was tough especially after the day before when we played against them and drew 3-3. Our main goal scorer throughout the competition Alex Scott, scored the two goals that got us through to the finals, beating St Albans 2-0. We were also fortunate to have two amazing goal keepers - Dan Gertel and Eli Jocum who
were kept on guard at all times.

The grand finals were played on a very windy and chilly day. This game against St George was very rough and the boys played with all their might, especially after the loss the other day. The game started with a magnificent goal in the first half by Alex Scott. The second half we conceded a late goal, this fired up our players. Five minutes before the end, we had a corner kicked by Alex Scott into the forceful head of Ori Port straight into the goal. The boys were elated and ended the game with a 2-1 win and lots of cheering and chanting from the players and the parents.

This week would not have been successful without all the 12 players- Jeremy
Skurnik, Ori Port, Greg Cohen, Lior Katz, Eli Jocum, Tyler Katz, Asher Lyandvert,
Robbie Csavas, Max Hudson, Rafi Cappe, Dan Gertel and Alex Scott. The
parents and sibling cheer squad gave all the players a boost of confidence and
of course our fantastic coach Joel Floress.

Under 11 Team

The U11 team played some spectacular football and were very unlucky in their group, coming short in some very close games to just miss out on the semi finals. The boys finished with 3 wins, 3 losses and a draw, the highlight being a narrow defeat to Maccabi Caulfield in a group internal derby. Coach Nick Short said: “I am proud of the boys and their efforts and even though we were unlucky with some of the results, the boys had a fantastic week.”
