Jewish Master Sportsman - Percy Weinstein Memorial Trophy

Michael Besser - Triathlon

Professor Michael Besser is a retired neurosurgeon who was awarded the Order of Australia (AM) in 2001 for services to medicine. He has represented Australia in triathlon several times in standard distance, long course and half ironman events as well as four Maccabiah. At the last two Maccabiah games he completed the "Maccabi Man" event (bike time trial, half marathon, standard distance triathlon and 5K open water swim) and was the oldest competitor to finish. Having completed 8 full ironman events, in 2017 Michael qualified to represent Australia at the Hawaiian Ironman World Championships in 2018.

Brian May - Swimming

Brian competed at the 2009 (18th) Maccabiah in Masters swimming, winning multiple medals in his age division. He remained close to swimming, mostly competing in ocean races over the years until the opportunity arose for him to join his son at the 20th Maccabiah. With that goal he re-focussed on swimming in the pool, increasing his workload to 6-7 sessions per week and competing in local masters swimming competitions. Brian achieved outstanding results at the NSW Masters event, the Australian National Masters event and then followed it up with a tremendous Maccabiah.

At the 20th Maccabiah Games, Brian won a whopping 6 Silver medals (200m IM, 100m Bk, 400m Fs, 50m Bk, 100m Fly, 1.5km Open Water) and 1 Bronze medal in the 50m butterfly.
