Maccabi nation-wide MS Swimathon raises over $20k!

Posted: 27-Nov-2019 by Maccabi NSW

The 2019 MS Maccabi National Swimathon was held in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth on Sunday 24 November. The Swimathon is a national event that has run for the last 9 years and reflects Maccabi Swimming’s co-operative and inclusive approach throughout Australia. Nationally there were 193 participants and a grand total of $20,789.68 was raised for MS and Maccabi.

Sydney’s Jewish Community once again threw on the speedos and churned through a mountain of laps at Moriah College Swimming Pool for this great cause. Four teams participated, 3 representing the Jewish Dayschools:  Moriah, Emanuel and Mt Sinai, along with a Maccabi team – made up from all corners of the community.

At times, the swimathon took on a very serious tone – with swimmers dutifully recording their laps and carefully watching their allocated time in the water… and then at other times the day took on a more ‘festive’ atmosphere – music played, parents swam with their kids and games/races ensued.

From 7am to 5pm over 80 swimmers took a dip, and once all laps were counted the Maccabi Team ended up on top of the tally – 1,467 laps and 36.675km swum!

All together over 5,100 laps were completed and over $9,000 was raised in Sydney.

Thanks to all volunteers, and especially the non-swimmers who organised and put together the day. Well done to all!
