Mazal Tov to Yonatan Freund, who, at the recent NSW Karate Awards night, was awarded the Cadet Male Kumite (fighter) for 2017.

Yonatan had a strong 2017, winning the NSW State Championships (both his division and open), the NSW Cup and coming second in the NSW Open.  On the National Level, he won the Australian open, and two gold and a silver at the National Championships representing NSW.

On the international front, he represented Australia at the World Championships in Spain in October, winning his first round, losing his second.

Yonatan was also the reipient of our Jewish Junior Sportsman of the Year for 2017, at our recent Maccabi Awards event.

Yonatan commenced karate at the age of 5, and started competing in the local State Tournaments from the age of 9. After a few years, he joined the State Karate Team, where he has competed in the Nationals for the last 5 years. In 2016 he joined the Australian team, winning silver in the Commonwealth Karate Championships. He has since competed 4 times for Australia, with the highlight being the 2017 World Championships in Spain. In 2016, Yonatan become a Black Belt, part of his long term commitment to the sport.
