Melbourne Carnival - It's a Wrap!

Posted: 19-Jan-2018 by Maccabi NSW

Last week saw the 36th Junior Carnival kick off in Melbourne. With 120 kids representing NSW and 360 kids overall, the much anticipated opening ceremony was a fantastic night.

The NSW team was led by flag bearer Nicola Hertzberg. After formalities and the official opening, a huge dance party ensued where kids started to meet other participants from QLD, WA and VIC.

Monday & Tuesday featured the sports tournaments for Tennis, Basketball, Netball and Soccer.

In basketball our NSW girls played a strong tournament, going down to a formidable VIC team in the final. Our boys team performed fantastically, beating out the VIC team in a tense and close final, coming away with a 3-point win to emerge champions.

In netball, our NSW girls (2 teams) went into the tournament as firm favourites and handled the pressure well all day. Strong games throughout the day saw the 2 NSW teams play each other in the final. In a hard fought final played with great sportsmanship, the NSW 'A' team took out the tournament.

In Tennis, the NSW players gave it their all and congratulations to NSW boy Oscar Morgan who took out the senior tennis title!

In soccer, our teams competed well but lost a close semi to the VICs, with WA then emerging as champions.

Aside from the sports there's been an array of truly incredible social events, starting with the colour run on Tuesday night where participants did their best to complete various obstacles and challenges while getting smothered in multi-colored chalk.. it was a very fun night!

On Wednesday we visited cable park where the kids attempted to conquer a massive inflatable obstacle course on the water, before a relaxed night learning how to play lawn bowls and tucking into an incredible dessert buffet.

On Thursday, we competed in our teams for the 'colour games', completing an ‘amazing race’ style challenge, before having the afternoon off to cool down given it was a hot melbourne summer's day. Thursday night saw a whole lot of energetic fun at the venue Bounce, where kids enjoyed wall-to-wall trampolines, dodgeball and jumping into foam pits.

Friday featured community day - a recent addition to carnival which sees all participants 'giving back' by volunteering their time to numerous communal organizations. Participants spent the morning doing all sorts of activities, such as creating care packages for the homeless or baking challahs for families in need. Participants also were given insights into things like 1st Aid provision and security awareness through short tutorials provided by community members.

On the Friday night all participants attended Caulfield synagogue - what a sight it was with 350 carnival participants in uniform filling the shule. Kids then went home to have dinner with their host families.

Saturday was a day of rest before we all met again one last time for the closing ceremony on Saturday night. Awards were handed out, with Jayden Wineberg and Tori Josman being named the NSW athletes of Carnival. Carnival was officially closed, before a BBQ and an epic dance party followed to close out the week of festivities.

On Sunday at the airport there were a few tears shed as the kids said goodbye to new friends, though we're all excited to do it all again next year!

A special mazal tov and thank you to the Melbourne organizing committee - Julia Hofbauer and her team who did a marvelous job of running carnival. And a huge thanks to our NSW youth leaders whose energy, passion and care for the kids of Team NSW really helped the NSW kids to have a fun, safe, AMAZING week!

See you next year!!
