President's Rosh Hashanah Message

Posted: 19-Sep-2017 by Maccabi NSW

As we bid farewell to 5777, we can look back with satisfaction with what we have achieved at Maccabi.

No doubt the highlight was Maccabiah. We sent 565 participants, our largest contingent ever. Our Juniors were 5th on the table; our Opens 4th; and, our Masters 3rd. There were so many great results and PB’s for both individuals and teams, and to cap it all off, Matt Levy OAM won 5 gold medals and became the first Australian to be named Best Male Athlete of the Maccabiah!

Our Clubs also had a great year:

  • Hakoah FC won the Waratah Cup, and capped off a great season by playing A League club Melbourne City in the FFA Cup round of 16, going down admirably 3-2 in front of 3,000 adoring fans
  • Our Rugby 1st XV played in their first Grand Final in years
  • Junior Football, our largest club, achieved 5 teams in Grand Finals
  • Senior Football produced two champions: Our AA3’s played an All Maccabi Final and shared the spoils, with one side winning the minor premiership and the other the Premiership. Meanwhile, our Over 45 Women’s side took out their Championship.
  • Netball had 10 teams contesting finals with 2 of them becoming Premiers
  • Our Futsal Club continues to shine, with our men’s team earning a silver medal in Israel in what is one of the most competitive sports at Maccabiah

Our Ten Pin Bowling Club is another Club that is growing thanks to the commitment of Howard Silver, Phil Levy and team. We have 2 Social sports clubs, established by our Young Adults that are the fastest growing Clubs in Maccabi. Social Mixed Netball now has over 200 participants, while Touch Football attracts 250+ participants for its summer competition.

Our Swimming Club continues to grow due to the passion of Anthony Goodridge and his team.  The Golf Club appointed a new President in David Felthun, have a re-energized board and established a Women’s division.

The Triathlon Club and Lawn Bowls Clubs have been very active with fantastic trips away for members. Tennis continues to grow as a Club, especially with their efforts to attract Juniors and Young Adults. Our Fledgling Table Tennis Club continues to gain momentum under the stewardship of Danny Beran. There are many other stories to be told. These are exciting times to be a part of Maccabi.

Maccabi NSW, your roof body, has been behind many of the initiatives that have taken place, with more to come:

  • Our new GM, Daniel Kresner has settled into his role and is developing a strong team around him
  • We have a Sports Officer, funded by Maccabi NSW and the Clubs looking after our 4 Football Clubs
  • Next year, we hope that Basketball and Netball will benefit from a part-time Sports Officer
  • Our fledgling All Abilities program has launched thanks to support from JCA
  • We are introducing the use of new technologies across the organisation to provide a more streamlined & convenient service and improve the way we communicate with all our members
  • We are running Leadership workshops for our Youth keen to become involved in the management of clubs
  • Our Membership Protection Program continues to gain momentum amongst our Coaches and Managers

And so much more! Other than looking forward to 5778, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you, especially our volunteers, for all your efforts, and wish you all a happy and sweet Rosh Hashanah for you and your families.

Wishing you a happy and sweet year – 5778. May you be inscribed and sealed in the book of life, and may the coming year bring with it peace in the world.

From the President and Board of Maccabi NSW, Danny Hochberg
