Maccabi launches All Abilities program with inaugural event

Posted: 12-Apr-2017 by Maccabi NSW

The Maccabi All Abilities Program held its first event last week, joining in on the activities with the Maccabi Swimming Club’s monthly club night.

The Maccabi All Abilities Program has been created to provide more sporting and recreational opportunities for people living with a disability. The program welcomes participants of all abilities and all ages.

For the first time this year, Maccabi has a dedicated Program Coordinator in Ezra Mizrahi who started in the role in January. Ezra commented that ‘We believe we can play an important role in helping many people in our community by offering more opportunities to engage in sporting activities. Inclusion is the ultimate goal of the program - we want to broaden the awareness of inclusion across the organisation and help make Maccabi more inclusive for people with a disability’.

After months of planning, Maccabi will be running the monthly swimming sessions as well as TenPin bowling (starting next month). As the year progresses, a greater range of sports will be added to the schedule, working with the various Maccabi clubs to integrate with their existing activities.

The Program will also aim to provide non-playing opportunities for individuals in the community who want to be involved. These opportunities could be involvement in club committees, assistance in team management, or taking on leadership and/or mentoring opportunities.

In regard to the swimming event, Mizrahi stated: ‘to have the first event completed is a huge step forward – to have had those participants join in the activities with the other swimmers for the first time is a great outcome, we hope to build from here and get more people involved for the next one’.
