Giving back to the community highlighted at Carnival

I WAS lucky to be involved in the first Community Day during Carnival, which was held in Melbourne in 2011.

Being part of a small group that headed to Kinglake; the small country town that was destroyed by bushfires the previous year, I had the opportunity to hear eye-opening stories of families affected by the natural disaster. Feeling inspired, I worked with an equally eager group of Carnival participants to improve the garden of a highly valued drop in centre for teenagers.

It was then that I knew I wanted to organise Community Day at Sydney Carnival in 2013. Then, after hearing so much positive feedback from the 2013 event, I was excited to be involved again for the 2016 Carnival.

We have over 20 Jewish and non-Jewish not-for-profit organisations on board for next year's event, including Assistance Dogs Australia, Animal Welfare League, B'nai B'rith Courage to Care, Friendship Circle NSW, Our Big Kitchen, Save the Children, Sydney Jewish Museum and Wesley Mission.

All Carnival participants will be allocated to a Community Day organisation on Friday 15 January for four hours where they will get the chance to volunteer or be educated about their Jewish heritage or learn about the less fortunate. It's sure to be a memorable event.

Remember to register your child/ren to Carnival so that they can experience it!
