President's Rosh Hashanah Message

Posted: 10-Sep-2015 by Maccabi NSW

ROSH Hashanah is a time of renewal. We leave the year that was behind, and start afresh.

This year, more than ever, we at Maccabi must adopt a similar approach. Change is in the air in sport. Compliance requirements are leading to greater safety for all our members through necessary initiatives such as WHS checks, WWC registration and Member Protection training. These place added pressures on our clubs and volunteers. Sporting Associations in some sports are restructuring, resulting in a changed environment that in some cases is disrupting the traditional club structures in which Maccabi has thrived. Our community is geographically more dispersed, resulting in a breakdown of economies of scale. Loyalty is not as strong, with many choosing alternative clubs rather than committing to Maccabi. This is disastrous for our clubs, who have to draw from a limited gene pool. Parents are looking for elite pathways. This adds pressure on clubs to achieve standards of excellence which require added resources, both human and monetary. Our youth are becoming harder to reach, as many choose to go to non-Jewish schools.

And the list goes on. Maccabi needs to find new ways to address these and the many other issues it faces. Good people, mostly volunteers, are working hard to achieve this. How can you help?

When the Torah states that God puts life and death before us, is it asking us to decide whether to live or die? Or is it saying that each choice we make has an impact, not just for ourselves but for others in our increasingly interconnected world? The choices you make, will make a difference. For yourself, your family and friends, our community.

This Rosh Hashanah, you can decide to reconnect with our community. To make a New Year’s resolution to become involved with Maccabi. Reconnect with us. When you choose Maccabi you are choosing to send your kids to a Jewish Club. You are making a conscious decision to support our community, and to give your child the opportunity to play with, socialise with and develop lifelong relationships with his or her Jewish peers. And as Maccabi is a Jewish Club, you and your child are representing our community in the wider community, and we hope that this is reflected in the way you conduct yourselves on and off the field/court.

We promise to do our best to ensure that your child’s experience will be a positive one. We are working hard to provide opportunities for those who wish to play socially as well as those who wish to excel. We have put in place member protection programs that are light years ahead of most other clubs. Our Maccabi Youth arm is driving programs in school holiday camps, developing our youth as leaders not only on, but off the field. We are engaged at White City, and looking to partner Hakoah with a home for Maccabi with state of the art facilities. Our teams are excelling in their sports: Our futsal team were NSW champions; Our Maccabi-Hakoah football team has been promoted to NSW Premier League; Our netball Club had 6 teams in grand finals; our basketball club competes at the highest levels in NSW; our fledgling cricket club has grown to 3 teams; we create state swimming champions; AND MORE……………

The future is exciting. This Rosh Hashanah, leave last year behind you, and join us in shaping the future of Jewish sport and our community.

Wishing all our members and our community a Sweet and Happy New Year!
