Message from the President - 14 August 2015

Posted: 14-Aug-2015 by Maccabi NSW

Maccabi is an organisation that relies on the goodwill of those who choose to support us.

Our volunteers give of their valuable time freely.

Our members choose to be a part of Maccabi because playing sport, proudly as a Jew, and socialising with other Jews is important to them.

And our sponsors and donors choose to support us because they recognise the role we play in the community and wish to see us not only continue, but grow and prosper.
Carnival is an enormous project to put together. This year it will be in Sydney. Justin Shelton, the Carnival Manager, and his young team are working day and night to give our kids and our guests from interstate the experience of a lifetime. The challenge is to provide the best possible experience in the most cost effective way, in order to ensure that the Carnival is accessible to all. To achieve this, we ask our community to help by sponsoring or donating to Carnival to reduce the cost to participants. We are grateful to all those who help.

I wish to mention two major supporters:

Gabrielle Upton, the Member for Vaucluse and Attorney General of New South Wales has been a long-time supporter of Maccabi NSW. She has been present at so many of our milestones over the last few years. More so, she has been an active participant. In 2012, as Minister of Sport, she attended  our youth leadership training seminar: MacSem. Gabrielle made a particularly strong impression on our young leadership group. In 2013, Gabrielle attended the Zero Tolerance seminar which addressed the behavioural issues in sport. In 2014, she spoke at our Maccabi NSW Awards night. She keeps in touch with us, and we appreciate her interest which is personal and goes well beyond the requirements of her public role. This year, Gabrielle has worked with us to achieve funding for the Sydney Carnival. Through her, we have received Government grants from the Premier and the Department of Sport and Recreation.

Millie Phillips is a well known philanthropist in our community. A very successful business person, she has been a major funder of many projects in the Jewish community. There are many needy and worthwhile organisations in our comment, and we are both flattered and honoured when we are chosen as a recipient of her largess. The JCA Millie Phillips Jewish Education Fund allocates funds to various causes that benefit our youth. Maccabi NSW has received support for our Carnivals over that last few years. It has allowed us to send and train larger groups of youth leaders who then go on to lead in Maccabi Youth. This year participants will be able to benefit directly. Through the fund we are able to offer 50 vouchers valued at $250 each to participants who meet certain criteria.

We thank Gabrielle and Millie for their commitment, vision, and ongoing support.
