Martin Knespal - the golfer

Last Sunday evening at the JCA function at Randwick Racecourse, I was sitting with NSW Maccabi CEO, Mick Vasin and I offered Mick the challenge to find the person who has been involved in or a member of the most number of Maccabi clubs.
A long time member of 8 different Maccabi clubs since the 1960s, my history goes like this:

  • Swimming Club - Participated as a junior, aged 7-12 years
  • Rugby Club- played from 1973 until 1981 - also played for NSW Rugby on tour in Israel
  • Water Polo Club - played from the age of 14 to 18
  • Tenpin Bowling Club - in the early 1970s
  • Tennis Club - played in the 1980s
  • Junior Soccer Club - I was involved in the committee from 1999 to 2011 and was Club President for two years
  • Maccabi Golf Club - I've been a member from mid 1990s to present. I was Club President for two years and am currently still a committee member.
  • Triathlon Club - I've been a member for the last 2 years
  • I also swam in the MAIGS games in the open water swim in Sydney

I enjoyed all stages of Maccabi membership and I found each Club rewarding at the time of being involved. I have to say, my fondest memories are playing for the Rugby Club - we were able to show the non-Jewish community that we could go toe for toe with skill and toughness, culminating with winning a premiership in 1977!
