Semi Finals - Under 20s Report - 7 Sept 2015

Posted: 07-Sep-2015 by Hakoah Sydney City East Football Club

Hakoah U20 bowed out of the NPL 2 finals series going down 2-1 to Mounties Wanderers at Sydney United Centre last Saturday.

The match was a tough and physical encounter with very little separating the teams in the opening period of the 1st half.

It was Mounties that opened the scoring in the 20th minute with their first foray into the Hakoah penalty area. A neat back heel set the ball into the path of the Mounties striker to shoot home from close range.

The 2nd half started better for Hakoah and some good interplay on the right flank sent Alex Nicolosi flying down the wing. He cut into the penalty box and was abruptly brought down by a Mounties defender and the ref had no hesitation in awarding a penalty kick.

Nicolosi dusted himself off and rifled the spot kick into the roof of the net for 1-1. He had a chance to extend the lead some five minutes later as he was through one on one with the keeper but had his shot parried away to safety.

With ten minutes left on the clock a cross into the area to the back post was volleyed into the mix and the Hakoah defence failed to clear the danger and Mounties capitalised to score what proved to be the winner for 2-1.

In the dying minutes Mounties had their keeper sent off following a melee which gave Hakoah a glimmer of hope but it was to no avail and their season was over.
